Austin Outreach Center
Austin Outreach and Community Service Center’s (AOCSC) mission is to improve the quality of life for African Americans and those in need by promoting and providing specialized services and resources in the areas of Health, Education, and HIV Prevention for African Americans and those in need. The goal is to provide culturally sensitive HIV education and information to prevent, and reduce exposure to and transmission of infection through the reduction or elimination of high-risk behaviors among African Americans. Recently, funding from the City of Austin Health and Human Services Department was awarded to the AOCSC Healthy Love Project. ARA is the fiscal agent for this organization.
Center for Health Empowerment
The CHE organization has received assistance in applying for grants with the City of Austin and will use the funds to provide HIV education to those in need. Funding from the City of Austin Health and Human Services Department was awarded to the CHE PreP Project. ARA is the fiscal agent for this organization.
Heritage Council MLK Celebration
The Austin Area Heritage Council will celebrate 24 years of recognizing and honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr on Monday, January 16, 2017. ARA supported this event through a $1,000 sponsorship.
Taste of Black Austin
The ARA supported the GABCC Taste of Black Austin. The Taste of Black Austin is a signature event that explores the narrative of economic development through the historical context of food. It is through cooking that we learned to build community and develop a craft that became an essential ingredient throughout the Southern road map. ARA was proud to support this event where 200 people were in attendance.
Anthony Edwards Art Exhibition
ARA hosted local artist and their artistic works throughout the historic Herman Schieffer/Eastroom building on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 5-7pm.; approximately fifteen community members attended this event and enjoyed the artistic work of Anthony Edwards.
Black Excellence Gala
The Gold Standard Foundation hosted the 2017 Black Excellence Tribute Awards. The event featured the finest talent in the Black community, showcasing Black excellence through song, spoken word, and dance on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 7:00 pm. ARA supported this event with a $2,500 contribution and 150 people attended this event.
NFBPA Black History Reception
ARA was a sponsor of the NFBPA Black History Event on February 24, 2017, at 6:00 pm at the Carver Museum. This event had music by Mz. Dre & 20ne Soul and food catered by Leila T’s. ARA supported this event with a $500 contribution and 50 people attended this event.
Capital City Argus Black History Month Celebration
ARA sponsored an ad for $750 in the program booklet for February 2017’s Black History Month Celebration. The event was held at the Elks Lodge with over 40 people in attendance.
FAFSA/APPLY TEXAS NIGHT & CAREER FAIR
The College and Career Center is having a Taco Tuesday Night for Apply Texas/FAFSA and a mini Career Fair for families. ARA was a proud sponsor of this community event.
ARA is sponsoring this musical event that will take place on March 9, 2017. ARA supported this event with a $1,000 contribution and approximately 60 people attended the event.
You Can Sing—Women in Jazz
Children from all over the community enjoyed a day singing and performing during spring break at the Women in Jazz “You Can Sing!” Vocal Performance Camp, Saturday, March 13, 2017 at the George Washington Carver Museum. Girls and Boys from ages 7 to 18 learned how to their voices and sing in different styles, rhythms and textures. ARA supported this event with a $2,500 contribution.
Texas Black Pages
Texas Black Pages took place March 8, 2017 – March 21, 2017 on the 11th Street Corridor. The ARA was a proud partner for this event that showcased food vendors as well as local black business owners in the East Austin community. ARA utilized Block 16 where four food trucks were available to serve people as they walked to SXSW events.
Return & Discover 12th Street Festival
ARA was a proud sponsor of this community event, featuring various prominent speakers and activities for the entire family, on April 15, 2017. Over 500 attendees were present for this community event.
Apex Explosion Music Festival
ARA was a proud sponsor of this musical concert series, featuring various prominent female vocalist, on Friday, April 28, 2017. Seventy seven people attended the event and over $1,100 was raised for the Apex Explosion youth participants through ticket sales.
AAUL Soul of the City Golf Tournament
The ARA sponsored a foursome team for the AAUL Soul of the City Golf Tournament that took place on May 25, 2017.
BL Joyce Parade
The Central Texas Black Cultural Foundation (CTBCF) serves the important public purpose of promoting cultural and educational social events and seminars highlighting the significant contributions of African Americans in the areas of culture, fine arts, heath, education, and entertainment in the City of Austin, Texas. CTBCF and the ARA partnered to host the 9th Annual BL Joyce Parade. The BL Joyce Parade included participation from AISD, Huston-Tillotson University students, parents and teachers, the Nokoa and Villager News Papers, Travis County, and the City of Austin. The parade took place on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. The parade procession traveled west down Rosewood to the Carver Museum, where there was a marching band musical jam session and performances from local schools. ARA was a proud sponsor of this event.
Bydee Book Signing Event
The ARA sponsored the Bryan Joseph book signing event to commemorate thirty years of Bydee Art on June 3, 2017 from 4-8pm at the Dedrick-Hamilton House. As a way of showing support for the event, ARA donated $1,500.
Greater East Austin Youth Association Miss Juneteenth Pageant
ARA supported the Greater East Austin Youth Association Miss and Little Miss Juneteenth Pageant as a sponsor on Saturday, June 10, 2017 beginning at 6 p.m. Twenty young ladies participated in the pageant and the winner was awarded a scholarship to Huston Tillotson University. ARA sponsored the Community Impact Award for the event with a donation of $1,000.
“Reflections of Cultural Heritage: A Juneteenth Celebration”
ARA hosted a Juneteenth celebration of local up- and-coming East Austin artists by showcasing artistic work in the historic Herman Schieffer/Eastroom building. This event took place on Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 pm. This event was free and open to the public and over fifty people attended the event. One artist, Tehya Bunton, was able to sell her work at the show! All art pieces will remain on display until October 31, 2017. Please stop by the office Monday-Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm to view the exhibition.
College Bus Tour 2017
ARA partnered with Central Texas Black Cultural Foundation to provide youth in the community the opportunity to visit and gain exposure to colleges and universities throughout the United States. The Southwest Bound 7 took place from June 18-24, 2017 and was created to provide learning and performance opportunities for students throughout the duration of the trip. The tour traveled across the country and visited the University of Texas-El Paso, the University of New Mexico, Northern Arizona University, University of Northern California, and UCLA! ARA was the fiscal sponsor for this tour and looks forward to exploring more universities in the years to come.
Jump on It Summer Concert Series
Established in 1997 and led by youth, Jump On It’s uniqueness lies in the ability to engage thousands of people by fusing live entertainment, education, games, market place and workshops weekly for the entire summer. During its years of operation Jump On It averages 1500-3000 people weekly (peaking at 10,000) making it one of the largest outdoor urban concert series in Texas. ARA participated in this event by providing a financial sponsorship of
ROSES Back to School Giveaway and Carnival
The ARA sponsored Rose Smith and the Black Women in Business Association as they gave away backpacks full of school supplies to youth in the Austin area. This event took place on Sunday, August 13, 2017 from 3-7 pm at the Alamo Park. Over 300 families received much needed back to school items.
The ARA will be a proud sponsor of the Big Brothers Big Sisters for Austin’s brightest gem, the Ice Ball. This event will take place at the JW Marriott Austin on August 26, 2017 from 6pm – Midnight. The community will enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, seated dinner, auction and live music.
Passport to Six Square
The ARA is a proud sponsor of this event which will take place on Sunday, September 3, 2017. Passport to Six Square will feature the historic Rhapsody Mural to create a space for attendees to be immersed into unique experiences reflective of the rich traditions that gave birth to the uniqueness of the African American legacy of Central East Austin.
2nd Annual Dr. Charles Urdy Golf Tournament
The ARA will be hosting a golf tournament at the Teravista Golf Course on Friday, September 15, 2017. This event benefited various community outreach programs that the ARA partners with. Over 44 people participated the event.
The Links – Harlem Nights Gala
The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1946, is one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other underrepresented minorities. The ARA participated in this event through sponsoring a table on September 23, 2017.
Soul Food Truck Festival
Austin’s Inaugural SOUL FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL was designed to appeal to attendees in search of the hidden soul food mobile truck gems that are tucked all over Austin. ARA was a proud sponsor of this event.
AAUL Equal Opportunity Gala
The ARA will be participating as a sponsor of the Equal Opportunity Gala- September 30, 2017. This event was an opportunity to recognize and honor corporate and individual champions of equal opportunity. The ARA is a proud sponsor of this event.
NFBPA Leadership Summit 2017
ARA is a proud sponsor of the 2017 NFBPA Leadership Summit. The mission of the NFBPA Central Texas Chapter is embodied in the organization’s commitment to strengthen the position of Blacks within the field of public administration; to increase the number of Blacks appointed to executive positions in public service organizations; and, to groom and prepare younger, aspiring administrators for senior public management posts in the years ahead. This summit took place September 28-29, 2017.
NFBPA Fundraising Golf Tournament
National Forum for Black Public Administrators Central Texas Chapter (NFBPA – CTC) presents their Inaugural Fundraising Golf Tournament “Swinging for Scholarships” which took place on take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017. A portion of the proceeds will benefit scholarships created for students at Huston-Tillotson University, Austin, TX.
Excellence & Advancement Foundation
The Excellence and Advancement Foundation will be having a gala event at Galvanize Austin on October 15, 2017 from 2-5 p.m. The Excellence and Advancement Foundation (EAF) is dedicated to transforming how communities combat the school to prison pipeline and mass incarceration through an innovative ecosystems approach to service. ARA is a proud sponsor of this event.
Inspire the Future Luncheon
ARA is a proud sponsor of this event. The Inspire the future luncheon will benefit 83,000 students and 6,000 teachers in A.I.S.D. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 26, 2017.
Huston Tillotson All Steinway Gala
HT nurtures a legacy of leadership and excellence in education, connecting knowledge, power, passion, and values. HT’s entry into the “All Steinway School” would make it the only higher education institution in Central Texas with the status and only the second historical black college or university in Texas with the status. This gala will take place on Friday, October 28, 2017. ARA is a proud gold sponsor of this event.
East Austin Studio Tour
The ARA will be participating in the East Austin studio tour (Sponsored by Big Medium) by hosting a temporary Art Exhibition November 11-12, and 18-19, 2017. Over 150 people are expected to attend this event.
Kids Helping Kids of Texas
The Kids Helping Kids of Texas Coat Collection and Distribution will celebrate the eighth year of executing their mission of providing winter clothes and shoes for as children as possible. This event will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 11 am – 1 pm. Over 1,000 coats will be distributed to lower income families throughout the community.
NAACP Dewitty/ Overton Award Ceremony
The 52nd Annual DeWitty/Overton Freedom Fund Banquet will take place on December 2, 2017 at the Hyatt Regency Town Lake at 6:00pm
