Dr. Charles E. Urdy Plaza

Type: Commercial
Size: The Square Footage

The plaza’s namesake — Dr. Urdy — is an educator, scientist, former Austin Mayor Pro-Tem, and long-time community leader. Dr. Urdy served as the first chairman of the Austin Revitalization Authority’s Board of Directors and currently holds the title of Chairman Emeritus.

The most visually significant improvement in the East 11th Street corridor is the Dr. Charles E. Urdy Plaza – a unique space that includes two mosaic tile murals by local artists John Yancey and Regina Thomas.

The two murals on the grounds of Urdy Plaza depict the heritage and culture of the area. The plaza also includes a clock tower featuring a plaque that outlines Dr. Urdy’s accomplishments and green space where visitors can enjoy a quiet moment and observe East 11th Street activity.
