The Austin Revitalization Authority worked with Capital Metro, the City of Austin, and two private utility companies on this $3 million project, securing a grant from the US Department of Transportation, to bury overhead utilities, upgrade water and wastewater service, and install striking streetscape improvements and public art.
The project upgraded 70-year-old water and sewer lines and produced the Urdy Plaza murals, clock tower, and 11th Street/IH35 entry arch. In 2005 the 11th St. streetscape won the Best Civic Beautification Award from Keep Austin Beautiful.
Additional improvements to East 11th Street include:
- A distinctive gateway arch
- Attractive street lighting and landscaping
- Transit amenities such as bus pull-ins, bus stop shelters and new sidewalks designed to enhance safety
