The Herman Schieffer House

Type: Commercial
Size: 1,400 square feet

The Herman Schieffer House, also known as the East Room Night Club, was built around 1895 and was granted historic designation from the City of Austin. The Austin Revitalization Authority purchased what was then known as the East Room Night Club and shut it down. This greatly contributed to the reduction of crime in the area.

Eligible for the National Register, the house served as the office of the Travis County Negro Agricultural Extension Agency (TCNAEA) in the 1950’s and 1960’s. It was a significant statewide agency, the first of its kind in Travis County, and its presence in East Austin was important to the African American community.

Non-historic portions of the original building were removed, and the building was relocated. The historic portion of the building was rehabilitated to the standards of the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Rehabilitation and new construction resulted in 5,555 sq. ft. of available space.
